The Baltimore School of the Bible was established in 1931 in response to a perceived need for a Bible school that was evangelical, non-denominational, missionary-minded, and committed to both sound doctrine and Christian living. It grew out of the prayers and planning of believers in Baltimore who desired a school focused on biblical teaching and spiritual growth.
Several influential Christian leaders and businessmen helped launch the school, including Gustavus Ober, Dr. A. C. Dixon, Dr. Paul C. Culley, Dr. Russell Bradley Jones, Dr. Arthur Forest Wells, A. S. Loizeaux, and Dr. T. Roland Philips. Originally called the Fellowship of Bible Study, the organization held its first rally in 1931 with notable speakers Dr. Howard A. Kelly and Dr. Tom Lambie. The first classes began on November 9, 1931, at University Baptist Church in Baltimore. Faculty members taught subjects such as Bible doctrine, prophecy, missions, archaeology, and book analysis. By early 1932, enrollment had reached 177 students and auditors.
The school experienced steady growth during its early years. From 1932 to 1934, it operated out of Northminster Presbyterian Church. In 1933, the State of Maryland granted the school a charter, and a formal constitution and by-laws were established. The founders selected Psalm 119:89 and 2 Timothy 2:15 as school mottoes, emphasizing commitment to Scripture and faithful study.
A major milestone came in 1942 when a successful building campaign allowed the school to purchase its permanent home at 1712 Park Avenue in Baltimore. The property includes a three-story brick building containing offices, a bookstore, library, auditorium, and alumni room. A second building houses classrooms and dining facilities. The school eventually became debt-free, providing a stable location for ministry and education.

Over time, the school expanded through branch campuses. A northern branch opened in 1973, later moving locations as enrollment increased. Another branch was established in Brooklyn, Maryland, in 1977. These expansions reflected growing demand for biblical education throughout the region.
The history of the school also honors many long-serving faculty and staff members who devoted decades to teaching and ministry. Their faithful service contributed to the institution’s longevity and influence. Over more than eighty-five years, the school has emphasized biblical instruction by qualified teachers who love Scripture and seek to deepen students’ faith. The institution credits God’s provision for its continued success and remains committed to preparing believers for Christian service and spiritual growth.
